The data mediation framework is an add-on software layer. Interoperability on the information level is
gained by data transformation services. The services translate the external view of the data of the system
to be integrated into standardized data elements. The transformation or mediation leads to a common data
understanding: the reference data model respective the common shared data model.
Technically, the federation approach uses the methodologies and techniques of heterogeneous data bases.
The respective techniques are extended to all sorts of applications.
The data mediation framework therefore is a virtual object oriented data base system, based on
commercial-off-the-shelf products that are configured by application specific mediation models.
Individual system components are communicating with this framework by using standard ODMG interfaces.
It doesn’t matter whether the needed data will be found in a local data base, in another system component or
in a distributed component.
To summarize, the data mediation framework encapsulates legacy applications and data bases to enable
the standardized communication within the federation.
